Abstract

Former Nueces County Commissioner and Sheriff James Patrick (J.P.) Luby Jr., fought for the perseveration of Gulf beaches for years. The materials include newspapers, correspondence, photographs, and political memorabilia from 1976 to 1996.

Biographical / Historical

James Patrick “J. P.” Luby was born March 11, 1933 in San Diego, Texas to James P. And Mable Wright Luby. His grandfather was Judge James O. Luby of England and his grandmother was Mary Hoffman Luby of Austria. Captain John M. Luby, Commander of the Guantanamo Bay Naval base was his uncle.

Luby graduated from Corpus Christi College Academy and attended St. Mary University. He served in the U.S. Army and Navy, and was a Retired Disabled Veteran.

He was a real estate broker, land development, property management, rancher, and a farmer before becoming the Nueces County Commissioner, Precinct 4 (North Padre Island) from 1976-1991. He advocated to have clean, open beaches. He balanced the interest of beach goers, conservationist, and developers. The J. P. Luby Surf Park, on Mustang Island, and the J. P. Luby Fishing Pier, in Port Aransas, were named after him for his dedication to public service. Luby also served as Nueces County Sheriff from 1992-1996 and was a member of the Sheriff’s Association of Texas. He was the Chairman of the Nueces County Tax Appraisal District. He served on the board the Corpus Christi Tourist Bureau, Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, Southside Lion’s Club, Nueces County Farm Bureau, Corpus Christi Board of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors, Texas Antique Gun Collectors Association, Corpus Christi Pistol and Rifle Club, Ducks Unlimited, and countless other organizations.

Arrangement

These documents include Nueces County Commissioner documents concerning local beaches and is arranged in two series, Political and Newspapers.

This collection was donated by Jamie Luby on 10-15-2013. The donation was assisted by Gracie Charles.
