Refusal of Service - Restaurants and Bars - New Braunfels, Texas, 1950 - 1960
The Discrimination Files sub-series contains materials documenting specific instances of discrimination occurring within the Latino community. Accounts of discrimination were sent to Dr. Garcia by individuals within the Latino community seeking assistance, as well as Dr. Garcia’s colleagues and correspondents. Cases included here do not fall exclusively into the types of discrimination covered by the other sub-series in the Latino Activism series. The subjects most prominently represented are housing and property, draft boards, immigration, jury selection, judicial discrimination, and public services. In addition, the sub-series holds items related to structural issues that particularly impacted the Mexican American community, such as representation in the census, popular media, and positions of power; small loan regulations, and laws restricting protest. A substantial portion of the sub-series contains specific reports of refusal of service and entry, and of segregation in both public and private sectors. Of particular note is a folder series pertaining to a campaign to remove Judge Gerald Chargin from the bench for discriminatory remarks (see Series VII: Civilian Service, Sub-Series A: United States Commission on Civil Rights for more information on this topic). The sub-series includes correspondence, material related to civil rights legislation, speeches, interviews, official statements, and reference materials such as reports, articles, and chronologies.
