Luther Jones Papers

Content Description

Mayor Luther Jones served eight years as mayor, ending in 1987, he also once served as commander of the Corpus Christi Army Depot. During his tenure as mayor, Corpus Christi acquired Naval Station Ingleside and the Texas State Aquarium, a new city hall and a new central library were built. Included in the collection are documents relating to the establishment of a four-year university in Corpus Christi, awards, plaques, campaign records, photos and correspondence.

Manuel Narvaez Papers

Content Description

Manuel Narvaez, a pioneer of the Hispanic people in human rights and educations, preserved documents, publications and news clippings on the Cisneros v Corpus Christi Independent School District case and its ruling by Discrit Court Judge Woodrow Seals in 1970. The ruling was in favor of the plaintiffs and was a landmark case for Mexican American civil rights against segregation and discrimination in the public schools.

This collection of papers focuses on Jovita Gonzalez Mireles’ early notes, and poems. Donated by Mireles’ husband’s cousin in 2000, it touches on the Mireles, Ramirez, and Hinojosa family’s tree and connections. Photographs, a scrapbook of poems from 1931 to 1933 written by Jovita Gonzalez Mireles and genealogy materials are included.

Gabe Lozano was a business man and politician that spent his life working to improve Corpus Christi. He was active in a large spectrum of activities in the area and was the first Hispanic American Mayor of Corpus Christi. Son of pioneering local legend Vincente Lozano, Gabe was a pioneer himself; persistently pushing for causes he felt strongly about and helping transform Corpus Christi into the city it is today.
