Forum records include papers related to the Civil Rights Act of 1964; correspondence to members of the Corpus Christi American GI Forum from Hernandez as Secretary of the organization; a call for Judge Gerald Chargin of Santa Clara and San Jose, California to be removed from office due to racist comments against Mexican Americans; and an issue of "Forumeer," the official publication of the American GI Forum reporting on 1000 marchers who protested the discontinuation of the VISTA program in Val Verde County.

Abstract
This collection contains correspondence, a newsletter, and program relating to Arturo Hernandez Sr.’s involvement with the American G.I. Forum and Hispanic Civil Rights in 1964-1970.
Biographical / Historical
Arturo Hernandez Sr. was born in Harlingen, Texas on May 12, 1929. As a teenager, he trained with the Texas State Guard, then enlisted in the Merchant Marines as a seaman. When he reached the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Army, moving up to the rank of Sergeant. He transferred to the Air Force and was involved in the Berlin Airlift. He was Secretary of the founding chapter of the American G.I. Forum, worked for Sears for 20 years, and retired from J.C. Penny after 22 years. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 84.
