Biographical / Historical

James Power the patriarch of this family was significantly involved with the struggle for Texas Independence around 1835. Previously Power and a partner, Hewetson, applied for a Mexican empresario contract to bring Irish settlers to Texas. They were given 42,000 acres of land intended for settlers immigrating from Ireland to South Texas. He was instrumental in establishing the settlement of Aransas City. The site of his house was designated as a historical landmark in 1836. James Powers is remembered today as one of the Founding Fathers of the Republic and the State of Texas.
