Dr. Robert E. Skabelund Collection of Kleberg, King, and Searcy Papers
These two boxes of correspondence include letters between Robert J. Kleberg and Alice B. King dating to the 1880s; letters between Richard M. Kleberg and Mamie Searcy, dating 1910s; and other assorted Kleberg, King, and Searcy correspondence, postcards, and envelopes. Robert J. Kleberg (1853-1932) married Alice King in 1886. Alice King was the daughter of Richard and Henrietta King, prominent ranchers in the South Texas region and founders of what ultimately became the King ranch. Richard M. Kleberg (1887-1955) was the son of Robert and Alice King Kleberg, and he married Mamie Searcy. Richard Kleberg became Congressman from this area and continued his family's ranching and business interests.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
In 2005, Dr. Robert E. Skabelund donated a small group of correspondence between Robert J. Kleberg and Alice B. King dating to the 1880s; letters between Richard M. Kleberg and Mamie Searcy, dating 1910s; and other assorted Kleberg, King, and Searcy correspondence, postcards, and envelopes. Dr. Skabelund said he discovered these letters in an empty, abandoned house in Corpus Christi when he was here in the service during World War II in the 1940s. He had them in his possession for approximately 60 years.
