Abstract

This collection consists of approximately 100 Nueces County Justice of the Peace and other assorted court records dating from 1858 to 1964.

Biographical / Historical

Due to high crime in South Texas, in 1853 three plots of land were purchased from Corpus Christi founder Henry Lawrence McKinny. The first Nueces County Courthouse was built here, then received a new courthouse next to it in the 1870s. The third courthouse was built in 1914. These courthouses are where the cases contained in this collection were tried and resolved.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged by folder and roughly from the earliest year to the newest year records, though there are some deviations to keep certain types of case records together.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These records were discovered in a home purchased by Corpus Christi Police Officer Tim Kleffner and donated to Corpus Christi State University on the suggestion of Don Zuris in 1991. Dr. Thomas Kreneck assisted with the donation.
