Biographical / Historical

Dr. Norman C. Delaney was a professor of United States History at Del Mar College. Teaching for 39 years, he was particularly focused in Naval History. The Norman C. Delaney Papers covers the research conducted by Dr. Norman C. Delaney in writing his book on the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi during World War Two. The Air Station was originally proposed to be constructed along Corpus Christi Bay in the 1930s and was finally ready for use in 1941. The Air Station was actively used throughout the war and served as a main trainng ground for Naval cadets and pilots. Delaney conducted dozens of oral histories with Naval cadets, aviators, instructors, and officers who served throughout war. Additionally, he conducted dozens of interviews with women who were active in WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Delaney also conducted interviews with African American Servicemen who shared their experiences in the armed forces, as well as civilian workers who contributed to the war effort. All of these interviews were recorded and transcribed. Also included in the collection are correspondence with veteran servicemen, as well as photographs of the air station during the war. Publications, research papers and military newsletters were also incoporated.
