State Democratic Convention - San Antonio, Texas, 1972
This sub-series consists of material related to specific election campaigns that Dr. Garcia worked on or followed, including the “Viva” clubs he founded that, beginning with the Viva Kennedy Club, rallied Southwest Texans to vote for candidates that supported Mexican American rights. The sub-series also contains correspondence and newsletters from elected officials, materials specific to political organizations such as the Comité Méjico Americano para Leales Demócratas and the Democratic Party of Texas, sample ballots including those urging voters to “Vote Straight Democratic,” and items related to Democratic conventions, most notably the Democratic National Convention of 1972. In addition, the sub-series holds voter registration and voting rights related material, including lists of registered voters, precinct chairmen information, information on the Voting Rights Act and violations of the law, illegal elections, voter suppression and gerrymandering.
