Series V: American G.I. Forum (AGIF), 1944 - 1996
This series documents Dr. Hector P. Garcia’s involvement in the founding and operation of the American GI Forum (AGIF). On March 26, 1948, the American GI Forum was founded as a permanent organization with Dr. Hector P. Garcia elected its first chairman. The primary mission of the Forum was to aid needy and disabled veterans, and to secure the privileges and rights of the United States Constitution for all veterans and their families regardless of race, color, or creed. Dr. Garcia’s involvement in the American GI Forum established him as a prominent figure in the early beginnings of Hispanic civil rights and he became nationally recognized for the Forum’s engagement in many civil rights accomplishments including the Felix Longoria Affair. Dr. Garcia continued to be an active participant in the American GI Forum, particularly the Corpus Christi Chapter, until his death in 1996.
